The Bloody Chamber
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Haynes Publications (September, 1995)
Author: Angela Carter
Average review score:

Truely the finest piece of gothic literature of the century.
Angela Carters book the Bloody Chamber can only be described as sparkling genious. Carter writes with the combination of the classic fairy tale, and magical realism, incorperating elements of gothic horror, and subversive sexuality. She weaves tales of sinister locations, fearsome monsters, and powerful heroes to leave the reader with a slanted version of an old moral. Her interpretations are brought to life by her powerful descriptions and modern settings. Her stories are proof that this genre can still terrify off screen. The Bloody Chamber is truely one of the finest pieces of gothic liteature of the century.

A loving dark twist on beautiful fairytales and folklore....
Angela Carter wields a deliciously decadent pen once again in The Bloody Chamber. This slim volume is packed with familiar tales retold with a dark gothic twist, each tempered with a saucy wit and the ability to impart new meaning onto old standards. Heroines are erotic, independant and canny, and their victories contain a bite, an edge that places these tales outside the traditional happy ending. Stories are beautifully overblown and hyperreal. The Bloody Chamber is stunning in its delicacy and sly, subtle humour that tempers even the darkest tale. This world is very female , where the instigators of action and solvers of perilous events are mothers, daughters, wives and wild girls. Carter's work is too beautiful to describe - she needs to be read again and again, and each time, a new shade can be seen to her impressive legacy. She is an addictive read.

Bugs at Play (Bug Board Book , No 1)
Published in Hardcover by Little Simon (April, 1997)
Author: David A. Carter
Average review score:

We love bugs!
This is the first book my son became interested in. He loves the colors and the big bug eyes. Being a sturdy board book it holds up!

One of our favorites
I don't know where we would be without David Carter and his bugs. Our daughter fell in love with Alphabugs when she was just a few months old and still pulls out a bug book over all others. I highly recommend them for not only the entertainment but also for the educational value. Our daughter learned so much from the wonderful world of Mr. Carter's bugs.

The Complete Handbook of Garden Plants
Published in Hardcover by Facts on File, Inc. (March, 1984)
Authors: Michael Wright and Brian Carter
Average review score:

Complete Handbook of Garden Plants
This book is the most complete I have ever read. It is out of print and I keep it checked out from the library system. I wish I knew how to get this book re-printed. I know there would be an interest by many gardeners who would gladly purchase this. As another reviewer wrote, you can carry it with you. Every plant that I have read about, or saw at a garden center, I have picked up this book and read about it and enjoy the beautiful drawings linked with each description. I love all of my garden books, but this one I would grab in a mad rush if my house caught fire. It is that valuable to me.

The most useful book in my reference library
This book was a gift in 1986 and it is by far the most useful and used in my reference library. It is illustrated and covers a scope of plants rarely found in one volume. It includes trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs, annuals, etc. If you can aquire a copy of it, you won't be sorry. It is also small and easy to carry to garden shops and as a field guide.

Courage and Information for Life with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: The Handbook for Patients, Families and Care Givers Managing COPD, Emphysema, Bronchitis
Published in Paperback by New Technology Pub (September, 2001)
Authors: Rick Carter, Brooke Nicotra, Jo-Von Tucker, Thomas Petty, Brian Tiep, and Richard Knowles
Average review score:

PRACTICAL COMMON-SENSE ON LIVING WITH COPD
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

To all who contributed to this fine book, my undying gratitude!

When first diagnosed with COPD, all I wanted to do was research, research, research! The more I read, the more frustrated I became - that is until I located Courage and Information. This book is so down-to-earth! And it is filled with prospectives of not only a physician (with no medical "jargon"), a psychiatrist (without all the normal "stuff") and...can you believe it?...A PATIENT. How unusual to find a book written, at least in part, from the patient's prospective. What a great idea! Like I said earlier, just good, practical, common-sense information.

Even my pulmonologist agrees that it is the best resource material he has seen! And as far as I'm concerned, that's the best recommendation of all!

It really WILL help me to live a better, more fulfilling life. It will help you too. But you've got to read it first. You'll be glad you did.

I KNOW I AM.

Helping You Find the Way
If you or someone you love has been given the diagnosis of COPD, you may be asking, What now? Is there anything that can be done? Is there hope? The answer is, Yes! Life can be good with COPD and this book is a most valuable resource for the COPD patient, caregiver, and health care professional.

As a respiratory therapist working in Pulmonary Rehab I see that patients who learn about their disease and how to cope with the changes it brings live healthier, happier lives. They know that education, exercise, and support as well as a positive attitude are so important.

Courage and Information for Life with COPD is not only your map to learning, among other things, about finding a great specialist, taking breathing medications, using supplemental oxygen if needed, and finding help and support in your community. It is the story of a lady who has experienced the devastation of the diagnosis and not only lives, but thrives with COPD! Jo-Von Tucker's search for knowledge has helped her to move from the role of patient / victim to that of person / survivor. You must know that you do not have to face COPD alone! When reading Courage and Information you will surely say, That's me. Jo-Von's been through some of the same things that I'm going through.

There are so many things you can do to help yourself. Changed as it may be, you can live a rich and full life, even with COPD. Courage and Information willl help you find the way.

Cowboys, Ranchers and the Cattle Business: Cross-Border Perspectives on Ranching History
Published in Paperback by University of Calgary Press (March, 2000)
Authors: Sarah Carter, Simon m Evans, W B Yeo, and Glenbow mus
Average review score:

A remarkable compendium of informative, insightful essays.
Editors Simon Evans, Sarah Carter, and Bill Yeo successfully collaborate to assemble a compendium of truly informative and insightful essays in Cowboys, Ranchers and the Cattle Business: Cross-Border Perspectives On Ranching History. From Terry G. Jordan-Bychkov's "Does the Border Matter?: Cattle Ranching and the 49th Parallel" to Simon M. Evan's Tenderfoot to Rider: Learning 'Cowboying' on the Canadian Ranching Frontier during the 1800s", to Lorain Lounsberry's "Wild West Shows and the Canadian West", the contributors bring their unique perspectives and researches to bear in a series thoroughly accessible, "reader friendly", illuminating, highly recommended perspectives and histories of the ranching business on both sides of the longest, unguarded border in North America from the days of the independent wild frontier down to the present "agribusiness" and global economy environments.

Highly recommended reading for western history buffs.
Cowboys, Ranchers And The Cattle Business will appeal to any student of American ranching and Western history, covering the work of cowboys and ranchers from early to modern times and providing different, cross-border perspectives on ranching history. The focus contrasts Canadian and American ranching history and developments and provides some intriguing facts in the process of comparing the two countries for differences and similarities.

Day Hiking Grand Teton National Park
Published in Paperback by Dayhiking Press (June, 1993)
Author: Tom Carter
Average review score:

Great Book
Very useful simple guide. I use this along with Best Easy Day Hikes to plan my hikes Oct 2002 - see curiouscat.com/travels for photos from the hikes shown in the book.

A must-have guide for hiking trips in the Grand Tetons
Small and light (great for backpackers) cheap (great for everyone) and best of all, it gives what the title says. A great day-hiking guide for the park, offering some of the lore and background history of the Tetons, information concerning the park's geology, biotic communities, native wildlife and weather conditions. You'll never find a book on the subject that gives you more (or even close to as much) for such a low price. Can't be beat--a must for anyone planning a trip to the Grand Tetons.

Day Hiking Yellowstone
Published in Paperback by Dayhiking Press (June, 1991)
Author: Tom Carter
Average review score:

Experience counts.
The twenty-five years of cumulative ranger experience of the authors really shows. Yellowstone hiking guides by Bill Schneider and Robert Stone contain more hikes (with much briefer descriptions) and guides by Tom Carter and Mark Marschall are fine books rich in description but the Andersons' book of 29 hikes is the "gold standard." It combines accuracy, useful topographic maps, interesting naturalist information, and excellent color photographs at a great price. It even makes a good souvenir to keep after you've hiked.

Good, inexpensive guide
Whether you want to see breath-taking scenery, waterfalls, unique geology, interesting history or find some good fishing, this book has it. The twenty hikes are divided into five each of short, half-day, full-day and overnight hikes. Each trail description includes the start and end point, distance, elevation changes, time required and comments.

Although we didn't try any of the overnight excursions, we did try at least one of the other categories. We especially liked the full-day hike (#14) to 7 Mile Hole. The side trip to Washburn Hot Springs is well worth the effort. Overall, we found the descriptions accurate and relatively easy to follow, although natural changes can effect some of the descriptions (for example, fire damage).

The book contains several good resources for inexperienced hikers, including good rules for hiking and essential equipment lists. A chart lists the type of features (waterfalls, geysers, wildflowers, etc) found on each of the hikes. Small sections of the USGS maps are included for many of the hikes, although purchasing a TOPO map is recommended.

The book is physically small so it fits well in a pack. It weathered our hikes well, too. We'll use it again and again.
